Waitawheta Hut is a popular family tramping destination in the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park. Most often families travel on the easiest route from Franklin Road. As you and your family becoming fitter and more experienced you might like to try a more difficult and challenging route. One this trip, we went in via the Waitawheta Tramway Track from Franklin Road, then out via the Waitengaue Stream Track to Woodland Road. This is a much more challenging route with countless stream crossings and a less cleanly groomed track. It's a beautiful route and highly recommended if you group is up for it. You'll need to arrange your own transportation from the road ends. The forecast was for hot summer sunshine and instead we got hot summer rain. Thank goodness it was pleasant enough to get wet feet because the rain made the rocks very slippery for rock hopping.
