October 23, 2004: New England Revolution GK Matt Reis & Columbus Crew Forward Edson Buddle get in a fight during the First Round of the MLS Cup 2004 Playoffs. Apologies for quality in video feed but this is the best I could find. Anyway, this comes from the first round of the 2004 MLS Cup Playoffs between the Revs and Crew, of which the Crew came into the game as the Supporters Shield winners and were upset 1-0 by New England on an Avery John goal, who entered the playoffs as the lowest-seeded team, and who had just an 8-13-9 record during the regular season. It speaks to the increased physicality of playoff soccer that this was able to happen without either player getting a card, hard to imagine that going unpenalized today, for better or worse when a player throws a punch. Matt Reis actually ended up saving two penalty kicks in this game, becoming the first goalie in MLS history to do so. Edson Buddle was a formative player in the league in the 2000s, scoring 42 goals for the Crew from 2001-05 and another 42 goals for the Galaxy from 2007-2010. If you remember the famous 5-4 RBNY-LAG game from David Beckham’s first MLS start in 2007, Buddle scored LAG’s final goal to knot the game at 4 in the 82nd minute. Quality striker. Matt Reis got most of his starts as NE’s goalie from 2003-2013. He was later an assistant/GK coach for the Galaxy, US, and was most recently a GK coach for the Columbus Crew in 2019.
