In this video, we take you into the workshop as we make a set of bespoke slatted fence panels from solid sapele for a garden designer. What makes this project especially interesting is the finish. These panels are designed to work in two completely different contexts: Three sides are stained ebony black to suit the clean, modern garden design inside the property One side is left natural sapele, planed back after staining to reveal the timber’s rich colour and grain The reason? The rear boundary faces out onto a public park, and planning requirements meant the fence had to present as natural timber externally, while still delivering a dark, architectural look within the garden. In the video you’ll see: How we stain and control the finish on multiple faces The planing process that reveals fresh, bare sapele after staining The contrast between the deep black finish and the warmth of natural hardwood The level of detail that goes into truly bespoke fencing This is a great example of how thoughtful design and craftsmanship can solve practical constraints without compromising on aesthetics.
