A playthrough of the boss Soul Edge in version 2/II of the arcade version of Namco’s Soul Edge/Soul Blade. Ah, version II. Here’s where things start to come together. So, what’s changed? You’ll notice that the colours for some of the backgrounds have been changed, as well as some sound effects. Hwang and Cervantes are now regular, playable characters, while Soul Edge remains an unplayable boss. The game generally seems a lot more balanced and fair in terms of difficulty, which is most noteworthy in the fact that Soul Edge/Cervantes’ Psycho Crusher-type move now actually uses up weapon meter, like a Critical Edge does. This means that they’re not quite the spam monsters that they were before, but they’re still pretty damn powerful. What’s more, Hwang’s moveset has been upgraded to include some kicks from Seung Mina (from what I recall), which makes him feel a bit more fleshed out at the least. Other than those points however, that’s it. Soul Edge ver. II was simply way to change or improve on the original release of the game, and tweak to be more refined. Think of it like the Star Wars Special Editions changes, if they were less shit. Soul Edge is more balanced here, which means less fun for the hacker but more enjoyment for the player as his boss fight isn’t (quite) as hard. Everything’s a trade-off, I suppose. Most of these changes were for the best, although it probably would have been better if Cervantes was unlockable or time-released rather than innately playable, especially considering he is the major villain of the title, but that’s just how it is I suppose. Up next, we move onto one of the most acclaimed ports of all time, as Soul Edge gets a name change for its PS1 port.
