The Shuswap Sub runs from Revelstoke, BC to Kamloops, BC and crosses some spectacular and constantly changing terrain. After crossing the Columbia River at Revelstoke, the railway leaves the Selkirk Mountains behind and digs in for the climb up Eagle Pass and towards the location of the Last Spike on the Canadian Pacific Railway at Craigellachie. The railway then enters the Shuswaps and runs along Shuswap Lake, through Sicamous which is the houseboat capital of Canada and towards Salmon Arm. After leaving the Shuswaps behind, the railway climbs through Notch Hill, where a CP grade reduction project in the 80's created an impressive horseshoe curve. After conquering the 1% grade, the railway then drops down towards the South Thompson River, which it will follow into Kamloops and then towards the Pacific Ocean. In late April 2025, we spent some time on the Shuswap Sub and made stops at the Clanwilliam Tunnels and Three Valley Gap, before checking out the Parks Canada monument at Craigellachie. Unfortunately, there was highway construction in Sicamous and no shots to be had, so we will see some trains snaking through Canoe and Salmon arm. We'll also see a handful of trains at Notch Hill and at Chase. At Geddis, westbound trains set out excess locomotives, which are no longer needed for the river grade run to the Pacific Coast. Eastbound trains lift these units, to be sent back east to assist the next tonnage train over the Rocky Mountains, the Selkirks and the Monashee ranges. We'll see a few trains at Campbell Creek, where the CN Okanagan Sub departs the CP mainline and heads towards Vernon and Kelowna. In Kamloops, we'll see a few trains from out hotel room beside the CP yard and watch the Rocky Mountaineer come into town and perform their station stop. For good measure, I threw in a clip of CPKC 401 departing Kamloops at Benledi with a pair of SD70ACu on the Thompson Sub, which will be feature in a future video. We'll finish our tour of the Shuswap Sub off with the Rocky Mountaineer crossing the South Thompson River just after sunset. 0:00 Intro 0:27 Revelstoke - CPKC 304-436: CP 8121, KCSM 4891 - DP 1x1x0 - 104 cars 1:53 Clanwilliam - CPKC 11R-20: RMRX 8019, RMRX 8015 - 10 cars 3:39 Clanwilliam - CPKC 800-159: CP 8884, CP 8815, CP 8044 - DP 1x1x1 - 152 cars 5:53 Three Valley Gap - CPKC 302-007: CP 9358, CP 8827 - DP 1x1x0 - 147 cars 7:43 Clanwilliam - CPKC 805-188: CP 8895, CP 9755, CP 9702, CP 8170 - DP 2x1x1 - 152 cars 9:34 Craigellachie - CPKC 101-21: CP 8041, CP 8139, KCSM 4734 - DP 2x1x0 11:48 Clanwilliam - CPKC 113-20: CP 8956, CP 9375, KCS 4699 - DP 2x0x1 15:16 Craigellachie - CPKC 2-105-21: CP 9729, KCSM 4508 - DP 1x1x0 16:57 Eagle River (Taft) - CPKC 805-313: CP 9372, KCS 4154, CP 8201, CP 8923 - DP 2x1x1 - 152 cars 19:21 Canoe - CPKC 805-188: CP 8895, CP 9755, CP 9702, CP 8170 - DP 2x1x1 - 152 cars 23:48 Canoe Beach - CPKC 804-986: CP 8796, CP 9735, CP 9839 - DP 1x1x1 - 152 cars 25:14 Canoe - CPKC 11R-20: RMRX 8019, RMRX 8015 - 10 cars 26:45 Notch Hill - CPKC 101-17: CP 8899, KCS 4827, CP 7055 - DP 2x1x0 31:17 Notch Hill - CPKC 101 DP unit and Drone Footage 36:49 Notch Hill Church - CPKC 11R-20: RMRX 8019, RMRX 8015 - 10 cars 37:56 Notch Hill Xing - CPKC 146-23: KCSM 4727, KCS 4707, KCS 4114, UP 5961 - DP 2x1x1 39:25 Notch Hill - CPKC 303-662: CP 7030, KCS 4623, CP 9704, CP 7017 - DP 2x1x1 - 148 cars 46:48 Notch Hill - CPKC 303-662 Heritage Unit CP 7017 52:10 Notch Hill Church - CPKC 303-662: CP 7030, KCS 4623, CP 9704, CP 7017 - DP 2x1x1 - 148 cars 54:31 Notch Hill Xing - CPKC 800-161: CP 8079, CP 8173, CP 9740, CP 8848, CP 8719, CP 9758, CP 9371 - DP 5x1x1 57:13 Salmon Arm - CPKC 103-19: KCS 5021, KCS 4836 - DP 1x1x0 1:01:53 Notch Hill - CPKC 9-149-21: CP 8162, CP 8905 - DP 1x1x0 - 46 cars 1:05:45 Chase - CPKC 201-22: CP 8108, CP 8602, KCS 4857 - DP 2x0x1 - 121 cars 1:06:58 Geddis - CPKC 146-23: KCSM 4727, KCS 4707, KCS 4114, UP 5961 - DP 2x1x1 1:09:13 Campbell Creek - CPKC 146-21: CP 8899, KCS 4827, KCSM 4503, CP 8795 - DP 2x1x1 1:10:56 Chase - 805-778: CP 9364, CP 9769, CP 8641, CP 8055 - DP 2x1x1 - 152 cars 1:12:18 Campbell Creek - CPKC 146-23: KCSM 4727, KCS 4707, KCS 4114, UP 5961 - DP 2x1x1 1:14:27 Chase - CPKC 605-138: CP 8955, KCS 4035, KCS 4850, CP 9824, CP 8009 - DP 2x2x1 1:16:10 Campbell Creek - CPKC 3-114-22: CP 8203, CP 7057, KCS 4651 - DP 1x1x1 1:17:58 Kamloops - CPKC 101-17: CP 8899, KCS 4827, CP 7055 - DP 2x1x0 1:19:11 Kamloops - CPKC WSH-22: CP 5046, CP 6069 - 7 cars 1:20:09 Kamloops - CPKC 301-318: KCS 4777, KCSM 4718, KCS 4579 - DP 2x0x1 - 139 cars 1:21:42 Kamloops RMR Station - CPKC 11R-23: RMRX 8012, RMRX 8018, RMRX 8016 - 18 cars 1:25:13 Benledi - CPKC 401-22: CP 7006, CP 7025, KCS 4606 - DP 2x1x0 - 106 cars 1:30:11 South Thompson River - CPKC 11R-23: RMRX 8012, RMRX 8018, RMRX 8016 - 18 cars
