(11 Jul 1995) English/Nat The wife of imprisoned Chinese-American activist Harry Wu is in Washington, lobbying the lawmakers and human rights groups to pressure Beijing for the release of her husband. Mrs Wu says the United States needs to send a strong message to China that the detention of Harry Wu is unacceptable. But the message from the Clinton administration continues to be one of dialogue and patience. The plight of Harry Wu was brought home to the U-S Government Tuesday as the imprisoned Chinese-American activist's wife was visiting Washington. Ching Le Wu is hoping to persuade members of Congress to take a harder line with Beijing in an effort to secure her husband's release. As Mrs. Wu left the capital, there was still no word on what effect her presence may have had on lawmakers. Chinese officials still insisting that Harry Wu is guilty of espionage, but will investigate his case further before issuing formal charges. In Washington, Mrs. Wu is also enlisting the help of the human rights group Amnesty International. The group understands Mrs. Wu's concern and frustration, agreeing that the United States should turn up the heat on Beijing. SOUNDBITE: "The Chinese only understand strength, not weakness. So U-S government should take strong and clear action about the release of my husband." SUPER CAPTION: Ching Le Wu, Wife of Harry Wu But so far, the Clinton administration is sticking with it's policy of negotiation. A policy that Amnesty International says only coddles the Beijing and sends the wrong message. SOUNDBITE:"The Administration has not given the right signals. They may not have intended, but the signals are wrong. That's why the Chinese have gone so far in arresting an American naturalized citizen and trying to charge him on espionage." SUPER CAPTION:T. Kumar, Amnesty International While Beijing and Washington try to find a diplomatic solution to the Harry Wu affair, Mrs. Wu continues to remain concerned for her imprisoned husband. SOUNDBITE:"Because Chinese government charges him of spy, something like that. That worries me very much, because those charges are false or political." SUPER CAPTION:Ching Le Wu No one is hoping for the situation to be resolved more than Ching Le Wu, who must continue a lonely vigil while her husband remains a pawn in a superpower game of diplomatic brinksmanship..
