Watertown was founded in 1836 by Timothy Johnson, who purchased land at the site where the Rock River cascades down a small waterfall. He envisioned the area's potential for water power and named the settlement "Watertown." The city grew rapidly due to its advantageous location along the river, which facilitated the development of mills and other industries. Watertown has a significant German heritage. In the mid-19th century, German immigrants flocked to the area, bringing with them a strong work ethic and contributing to the city's industrial growth. Watertown became known as "Klein-Wien" or "Little Vienna" due to its German cultural influence. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Watertown emerged as a thriving industrial center. It was home to numerous industries, including manufacturing of machinery, foundries, and textiles. One notable industry was the manufacture of wooden wagons and carriages, which earned Watertown the nickname "The Carriage City." Watertown is recognized for having the first kindergarten in the United States. Margarethe Meyer Schurz, wife of prominent German-American statesman Carl Schurz, established the first kindergarten in Watertown in 1856. Today, the site is marked by a historical plaque. As of the census of 2020, the population was 22,926. The racial makeup of the city was 87.9% White, 1.2% Black or African American, 0.8% Asian, 0.4% Native American, 3.5% from other races, and 6.2% from two or more races. 9.6% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
