With a view toward building stronger relationships with Aboriginal people and their communities, the Coastal First Nations/British Columbia Reconciliation Protocol was signed in December 2009. As part of the accord, it was agreed to explore the possibility of building a new ferry terminal in Klemtu, which is a small village located on Swindle Island in the coast fjords of the west coast; population of over 500 and only accessible by sea or air. In early 2010, funding totalling $25 million from the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada's Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, was allocated for a new ferry terminal. This project was completed on schedule and under budget in a very remote location. The new terminal is a major benefit to the remote coastal community and facilitates shipment of processed farmed salmon from the village fish processing plant. Band members will also be better able to travel for health care, education and employment opportunities. Goods and services will flow to and from the community with greater ease, creating economic opportunities.
