The KTLA newsfilm collection at UCLA consists of cut and unedited stories, outtakes and fill footage, originally shot on 16mm reversal film stock with magnetic soundtrack. Some footage, particularly material not used for broadcast, may be without sound. Title: "Angela Davis murder trial, arraignment and pre-arraignment in San Rafael, California." Date: January 5, 1971. Summary: In 1970, Jonathan Jackson tried to free his brother George Jackson, a Black Panther and prison inmate, by smuggling guns into the Marin County courthouse during the trial of another Black Panther, arming the convicts and taking the judge, the deputy district attorney, and three jurors hostage. The judge was killed during their escape. Angela Davis, who had connections to the Jackson brothers and was the registered owner of the guns used in the incident, was charged with murder, kidnapping and conspiracy. This material is silent courtroom and courthouse footage from the arraignment and pre-arraignment for the Angela Davis murder trial held at the Marin County Superior Court. Footage includes people entering the courthouse, going through metal detectors, being pat down, and having their bags searched. Shots inside the courtroom include Angela Davis and her lawyers, the press, spectators and co-defendant Ruchell Magee. Also included are exterior shots of the courthouse and a helicopter flying overhead. Although most of the footage is silent, some of the exterior shots and metal detector/search shots have ambient sound.
