With a Train Tech SFX20 sound capsule fitted, the noise of the ribbed wheels on this Diesel Pullman was drowning out the SFX20 so I set about getting smooth wheels and here's what I did. I also did the same to my old 1960s DMU. The wheels can easily be removed from the axles and secured with a suitably sized nut and bolt. The bolt then gets fixed in the chuck of a battery drill and milled down against a file. Diameter of the rim starts at 16mm and needs to be taken down to about 15.2mm; once that size is reached, just allow the file to smooth off both faces of the flange using the drill. It is essential that the bolt is a very close fit to the wheel centre hole or the flange rims could end up off centre of the wheel. Take time to do this to keep the wheel temperature low by applying a relatively light but consistent pressure and run the drill at as high as speed as you can control to ensure an even reduction. It helps if you clamp the file down and thus have both hands free to control the drill.
