In Part 2 of our Regulation of Breathing series, Professor Zach Murphy focuses on the role of Central and Peripheral Chemoreceptors in maintaining proper ventilation in response to changes in blood gases and pH. We begin with the central chemoreceptors, located in the medulla oblongata, which primarily respond to changes in CO₂ levels and the resulting pH of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). You’ll learn how increased PaCO₂ leads to CSF acidification, triggering a powerful increase in ventilation to restore homeostasis. The lecture then covers the peripheral chemoreceptors, located in the carotid bodies and aortic bodies, which are sensitive to low oxygen (PaO₂), high CO₂, and decreased arterial pH. We explain how these receptors send rapid signals via the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves to the respiratory centers, especially during acute hypoxemia or metabolic acidosis.
