This webinar marks the first session in our 2026 series exploring the links between the IMF, sovereign debt and the climate crisis. We were joined by experts from Eurodad, MENA Fem, Christian Aid, the Centre for Science and Environment and Recourse to unpack how IMF conditionalities, debt burdens and global financial governance structures are shaping climate outcomes in the Global South. The discussion examined the structural injustice embedded in the international financial architecture and why tackling the climate crisis requires confronting the debt crisis. Speakers reflected on the IMF’s role in global economic decision making, the pressures facing countries forced to choose between development and climate action, and the need for reforms that align financial governance with climate goals and human rights. The conversation also explored alternatives, including feminist and justice based approaches to restructuring the global financial system. Watch the full recording to understand why global financial architecture reform is central to climate justice.
