Murders of The Gulenist Cult

The Gulenist cult thrives on secrecy and dissimulation. When opponents of the cult decipher its activities and reveal them to the public, Gulenist cult members are ready to undertake every possible means to silence their opponents and to prevent information about them being leaked to the public. In this context, Gulenist cult members are implicated in the murder of several scholars and journalists in Turkey. The two most notorious murder cases are the assassination of the anti-Gulenist academic Necip Hablemitoğlu in 2002 and of the journalist Haydar Meriç in 2011. Both figures had conducted in-depth research on the infiltration of Gulenist cult members in the judiciary, police, and army in Turkey, and were about to publish their findings in the form of a book. However, both were murdered before their books were published. The role of the Gulenist cult in the assassination of Hablemitoğlu is also noted in the official reports prepared by the Parliamentary Research Commission of the Turkish Grand National Assembly following the July 15, 2016 coup attempt. The assassination of the prominent Armenian-descent Turkish journalist Hrant Dink on January 19, 2007 is notorious and shocking. Dink was the editor in chief of the critical Agos newspaper. In the official accusation of the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of Istanbul (dated December 4, 2015) it is stated that Gulenist cult members aimed to instrumentalize the tense political atmosphere created in the aftermath of the Dink murder to launch the infamous sham trials of Ergenekon and Balyoz. All this shows once more that despite the fact that Gulenist cult members portray the cult as a peaceful and moderate religious community, in reality it is a violent, destructive cult that eventually evolved into a terrorist organization.
