They arrived in Amman for meetings with the director-general of the World Health Organization and other international officials, stepping out of their car in sharp, coordinated outfits and moving straight into a full schedule of visits. On paper, the program is charitable and private. In practice, it looks like an unofficial royal tour at the exact moment the monarch is trying to steady the institution after Andrew’s arrest. The couple will spend time in Amman and at the Za’atari refugee camp, meeting children and families displaced by the fighting in Gaza and visiting projects that arrange medical evacuations of injured youngsters from Gaza to hospitals in Jordan. They are also due to call at the regional base of World Central Kitchen in the capital, where aid into Gaza is coordinated, and to sit in on briefings with United Nations representatives and diplomats. Their office has already issued a detailed question-and-answer sheet to news outlets to head off accusations that the focus on Gaza makes the trip a political intervention.
