Edward Espe Brown is an American Zen teacher and author of the bestselling Tassajara Bread Book, Tassajara Cooking, The Greens Cookbook (co-author), No Recipe, and The Most Important Point: Zen Teachings of Edward Espe Brown. He served as the first tenzo (cook) at the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center and was a close student of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi until his death in 1971. Edward is a dharma heir to Sojun Mel Weitsman. Suzuki Roshi taught him, You’re the cook. When you wash the rice, wash the rice. When you cut the carrots, cut the carrots. When you stir the soup, stir the soup. When you cook, you’re not just working on food—you’re working on yourself, you’re working on other people. Edward writes: As with meditation, cooking is not a matter of getting or having, but a vehicle, a mode of manifesting your innate good heart and benevolent hands. Your spirit becomes food; food for yourself and food for others: very immediately and very directly, you give life to life. How sweet is that? You offer what you have to offer.
