The Orthopedic Specialty Institute was established in 2015 and born out of the vision of a highly specialized orthopedic group designed to provide a range of orthopedic care and treatment to patients. While our name is new, our foundation has deep roots. Before we became OSI, we were The Lyman Knee Clinic, a specialty orthopedic practice in Coeur d’Alene that focused solely on knee care and treatment. Dr. Jeffrey Lyman, M.D. started The Lyman Knee Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz. and moved it to Coeur d’Alene in 2011. As a knee specialist, Dr. Lyman has treated several thousand patients from all over the United States and Canada, helping them overcome a variety of knee-related problems. While his focus is knees, he saw many of his patients over the years experience other unrelated orthopedic injuries. The need to provide them care was evident—but not just any care. Dr. Lyman decided to expand his practice and build a team of highly trained specialists to treat a wider range of orthopedic injuries. Dr. Lyman partnered with longtime Spokane orthopedic surgeon Thomas Halvorson, M.D. to form OSI. Dr. Halvorson is a sports medicine specialist with fellowship training. He has spent the last 14 years in the Spokane area caring for college and professional athletes while working with many of the local high school coaches and trainers to build excellent Sports Medicine in Spokane. Dr. Halvorson also holds a certificate of additional qualifications in sports medicine—only two orthopedic subspecialties offer such advanced certification. Together, the two physicians created the foundation of OSI, a growing practice of specialists who are not only experts but passionate about their areas of focus. OSI has offices in the resort town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and in Spokane, Washington—the heart of the Inland Northwest.
