But nestled along the path is a stone monument—nearly invisible to those who don’t read Japanese. It marks the site of a mass execution of Christians, carried out by Tokugawa Ieyasu in response to Hideyoshi’s earlier openness to missionaries. While Hideyoshi is celebrated across Kyoto, this monument is neglected and largely forgotten, raising a haunting question: When does history become heritage—and when is it erased?
