In this video, we’ll be diving into the causes and clinical presentations of hypothyroidism, following our previous discussion on hyperthyroidism. We'll focus particularly on Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, its common signs and symptoms, and its impact on thyroid function. You’ll also learn about how to approach a patient with a solitary thyroid nodule, an important clinical scenario in thyroid management. We start by contrasting hypothyroidism with hyperthyroidism, noting the key difference: while hyperthyroidism is characterized by an excess of thyroid hormones, hypothyroidism involves a deficiency. This deficiency leads to fatigue, weight gain despite a low appetite, constipation, and cold intolerance—key features that distinguish hypothyroidism from hyperthyroidism. We’ll also discuss the characteristic hair loss seen in hypothyroidism, specifically the loss of the outer two-thirds of the eyebrows, and how menstrual changes, such as menorrhagia, are more common in hypothyroid patients. By the end of this video, you'll have a clearer understanding of the clinical features of hypothyroidism, particularly Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and how to differentiate it from other thyroid disorders. We'll also touch on the management of solitary thyroid nodules as we wrap up our discussion on benign thyroid disorders. Stay tuned for our next module where we will discuss thyroid carcinomas in more detail.
