Ultrasound Features of Acute Appendicitis in a Child: Acute appendicitis in children appears as a coiled tubular structure near the cecum, with cross-sections resembling concentric circles. A key finding is an increased appendix diameter of 6.5 mm, exceeding the normal limit of 6 mm. The appendix wall is thickened and hypoechoic, surrounded by hyperechoic, inflamed mesenteric fat. Color Doppler imaging reveals increased vascularity in the appendix and surrounding fat, indicating active inflammation. Marked probe tenderness over the appendix is significant, while the absence of fluid collections or abscess suggests uncomplicated appendicitis. Differential diagnoses include mesenteric lymphadenitis, Meckel’s diverticulitis, and intussusception, among others. Diagnostic criteria include a non-compressible appendix, a diameter more than 6 mm, periappendiceal inflammation, and probe tenderness. With prompt appendectomy, prognosis is excellent, but delayed treatment may lead to complications like perforation or abscess formation. #AcuteAppendicitis #PediatricRadiology #UltrasoundImaging #ColorDoppler #AppendicitisDiagnosis
