USS Percival: Spruance’s First Command and a Survivor of Honda Point

USS Percival, commissioned in 1920 under the command of future WWII admiral Raymond A. Spruance, began her service training along the California coast with the Pacific Fleet. She drilled in torpedoes, gunnery, and readiness maneuvers before becoming part of the infamous Honda Point Disaster in 1923. While many destroyers were wrecked, Percival survived the catastrophe and soon became the flagship of Squadron 11. Through the 1920s she took part in annual fleet problems, Pacific patrols, and large-scale tactical experiments as the Navy refined modern destroyer doctrine. Decommissioned in 1930 and scrapped in 1931, Percival carries a legacy tied to both tragedy and progress.
