The tune of "Milanollo" was written by the 19th-century German composer Johann Valentin Hamm [de] for the Italian violinist virtuoso sisters and child prodigies, Teresa and Maria Milanollo. They introduced it to England in 1845 in the course of their extensive European tours.[1] In the 1880s it was officially authorised, along with all regimental marches, by the War Office[2] as a regimental march for the Coldstream Guards. The Coldstream Guards adopted the march under the title "Milanollo" and the official arrangement was authorised in 1882.[3] From 1907 to 1936 it was known as "The Coldstream March", and republished under that title in 1925.[3] The current arrangement was written by one of the Coldstream Guards' former Directors of Music, John Mackenzie Rogan, and it is known today as "The Coldstream March - Milanollo".[3] Other regiments that adopted it include the Life Guards, the Suffolk Regiment, and the Governor General's Foot Guards.[3]
