Amenta Rouge was created by Scarlett Rouge in partnership with Studio Rö, and the participation of mask creator, Muriel Nisse. Rooted in the allegorical tradition of purgatory, Amenta Rouge explores a liminal space of transformation. Neither condemned nor liberated, the soul moves through an intimate process of purification. The soundtrack, composed by ELOHIM, underscores the feeling of suspension. While Nisse’s mask, Odess, inspired by Aztec mythology, embodies the enigmatic powers of the cosmos. Scarlett Rouge channels this metamorphosis with slow, symbolic gestures — assembled from Castaneda’s teachings in Magical Passes, whose aims are to tether our energetic fields to the physical body. The ceremony starts with a Lakota chant for healing, blessing the initiate as she starts a purge from the burdens of old emotional baggage, detrimental to the souls eternal journey. Meanwhile, Studio Rö’s scenography becomes a living altar: natural textures and candle light converge into a contemplative, sensorial space. The centrepiece, a decorative screen of carved plaster and painted wood, an artwork by Rouge, Death is the Seed from which I Grow, 2024. A figurative sepulchre and literal representation of the divisions between realms. It is here the past is laid to rest and she is reborn. In Amenta Rouge, Scarlett finds refuge through ceremony, offering a poetic rebellion against fragmentation and detachment. Through movement and presence, she reignites our ancestral memory and the sacred within. This is not simply a performance, but a sanctuary where slowness is resistance and ritual becomes a way to reimagine the future. In this proposition, sanctuary is not solely a place of protection, but a beacon calling for a return to what matters most.
