Source MyCountyLink.com Russell Thompson Greenville Fire Chief GREENVILLE – On January 23, 2024, at approximately 12:20 pm, the Greenville Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to the 400 block of Union Street on a reported train derailment. Consisting of 42 rail cars in total, nine cars derailed. While six cars were empty and remained upright, three cars containing ethanol toppled over; the train had just departed from The Anderson’s Marathon Ethanol Plant. Of the cars on their side, non of them were leaking any product. There was no hazard to the City, nor the environment at the time. R.J. Corman, the owner of the track, worked diligently to get crews here. The first wave of crews arrived around 5:30 pm, with a second wave arriving around 9 pm. The scene was fully mitigated without further incident by 1 am, and the roadway was reopened at 2 am. Crews returned yesterday morning to begin repairs to the track. R.J. Corman will have Wayne Street (OH 571) closed from North Main Street to Union Street starting yesterday at 10:30 am and continuing through sometime this afternoon. Local traffic still has access to West Street and North Main Street. A statement from R.J. Corman has since been received and reads as follows: We can confirm that there was a derailment on the R.J. Corman Railroad Company Western Ohio Lines (RJCW) in the City of Greenville, Ohio. Nine cars were involved, including six empty hopper cars, followed by three loaded ethanol tanks. There were no injuries or environmental issues related to the derailment. With the support of local emergency response from the Greenville Fire Department and the Greenville Police Department, we were able to secure the area of the incident and determine there was no threat to the community. After the initial assessment, multiple crews and an environmental team were dispatched to work the site and continue to monitor the situation. We will continue to investigate to properly determine the root cause of this incident. We want to extend our utmost appreciation to all first responders and local organizations that responded to the incident. We are grateful to the community of Greenville for their support and patience as we act responsibly to investigate and repair.
