Ok, well I tried. Put this Side One out to test the waters, and it looked good. 'Weary Blues' was apparently copyright-blocked in Russia, but other than that, all good. So I added Side Two, and WOOP! WOOP! WOOP! - nope. Blocked. It seems the copyright owners for Frankie Newton & His Orchestra (or, as they're more widely known, "who?") are on the case, and not to be denied. Am I allowed to say 'idiots'? It's like trying to get past the knuckle-dragger at the door ("If yer wanna deal with The Champ, yer havta deal with me!") - it having apparently escaped knuckle-dragger's notice that The Champ is now 87, eats through a straw, and is circling the plug hole of history. You should be paying me, you imbeciles, not blocking me. The likes of me are the only thing keeping The Champ from sliding soundlessly into oblivion. And breath... So, this, thanks to the Kopyright Kops, is all you'll get to hear of this terrific record - the upshot of a mission by French jazz fan Hugues Panassié to assemble and capture the best of New Orleans jazz, at a time when it had been almost erased from the public imagination by the arrival of the big bands. A lot of this was new to me - my ignorance knows no limits - but alongside sterling work from names I do recognise (Bechet, Mezzrow "...not only because he was the best white clarinettist to play the New Orleans style..." - say wha?) there's excellent contributions from people like pianist Cliff Jackson, trumpeter Tommy Ladnier, and - with the kind of name you find only in jazz - drummer Zutty Singleton. Frankie Newton, I fear, you'll have to live without. Anyway, here's hoping you enjoy.... Side 1 Weary Blues (BS-030321-1) Recorded 11/28/38.
