Fanchang, a County in Wuhu City, Anhui Province, China, boasts an ancient kiln site called Longyao, or literally dragon kilns in English. The kilns, about seven meters in diameter and nearly a hundred meters in length, lie along the sunny side slope of the mountain and extend upward at an angle of nearly 30 degrees. There are numerous pieces of porcelain debris, some as blue as the sky and some as white as jade, scattered between the two kilns. After so many years, they still demonstrate the charm of the porcelain produced over one thousand years ago. Fanchang Longyao started production in the Five Dynasties (907-979) and thrived in the Northern Song Dynasty (960—1279). In a period of 300 years of economic prosperity and trade expansion, the kilns left unique footprints in its glorious development in the long history of Chinese porcelain. The binary formula, a successful invention of Fanchang kilns, proved to be very profitable when applied in production. As the locally sourced china clay lacked certain ingredients, the craftsmen, after many experiments, added local aluminum-rich clay into porcelain material in a top-secret proportion, which enriched Al₂O₃ content in the porcelain body obviously. Thereafter, high quality, eye-catching bluish white porcelain came into being, which became a brand of high quality porcelain produced in Fanchang. According to experts, the porcelain produced in Fanchang is a typical embodiment of the integration of the ancient Chinese craftsmanship and technological innovation. Because of the creation and development of the bluish white porcelain, the map of porcelain production featuring “white in the north and bluish in the south” changed into three colors, namely, white, blue and bluish white. Fanchang Longyao Site Park is located on a green hillside. The ember colored roof of the museum in the shape of a loaf of sliced bread looks like the fire burning out from the millennium kilns underground. Now relax, slow down you pace, walk lightly, and see with your eyes and feel with your heart. It is time to say hello across time and space to the kilns in the exhibition hall and enjoy the exhibits, like the tea pot with a bird head-shaped lid, the tea cup with a lotus leaf-shaped saucer, to name only a few. All the bluish white objects look like pure ice and warm jade, and in just a moment, they tightly attracted my eyes and deeply touched my heart. Fanchang Longyao, a legendary dragon kiln site featuring broad kiln chamber and strong kiln fire that produced bluish white porcelain over one thousand years ago.
