Summer tested this garden. My tomatoes struggled, my potatoes were hit hard by spider mites, and for the first time ever my butternut produced not a single fruit. But gardening always gives us another opportunity to start again. In this video, I show how I’m resetting my garden for March here in South Africa after summer pest pressure and crop challenges. March is one of the most important transition months in the garden, and the decisions we make now can determine how productive our winter harvest will be. In this garden reset I will be: • Removing spider mite–affected potatoes • Clearing unproductive butternut vines • Sowing root crops like beets, turnips, and baby carrots • Starting cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli for winter harvests • Planting peas on the trellis to restore nitrogen to the soil • Pre-germinating parsnips using the paper towel method If your summer garden struggled with pests, heat, or poor production, March is the perfect time to reset, replant, and prepare for a productive winter garden. Gardening is not about perfect seasons — it’s about learning, adapting, and planting again.
