Pt. Ram Narain - #RIP One of the finest exponents of Sarangi in the world, Pt. Ram Narain departed today to get immersed in to the infinity. He is responsible for giving Sarangi, a grace and stature in Masses by his solo performances, stage shows and of-course with those immortal pieces in films like Paakeezah, Kashmir Ki Kali, Adalat, Ganga Jamuna, Mughal-e-Azam, Taj Mahal, and many many more... He was born & brought up in Udaipur, worked for Radio in Lahore and Delhi, before finally making it to Mumbai. He was closely associated with OP Nayyar, Naushad, Madan Mohan, Jaidev, Roshan, RD Burman and many more.. and he left cinema to serve classical music later and came up with dozens of music albums with Sarangi in the focus, was blessed to see and meet him on a few occasions with some fond memories. 1. Deewana hua badal - OPN This is Pt. Ramnarayan playing the prelude and postlude in OP Nayyar's famous Deewana Hua Badal for Kashmir ki Kali - OP Nayyar had said once that he owes a lot to those brilliant musical sarangi pieces of Pt. Ram Narayan 2. Nain Lad Jahiye - Ganga Jumna - Naushad The magic that Dilip Kumar carried in his swings in such beautiful frames & memories, superbly backed by those lovely Sarangi pieces in the interlude as a rhythm. 3. Yoon Hasraton Ke Daag - Adaalat - Madan Mohan Sarangi has been one of the core accompaniment in Mujra Singing, and Pt. Ramnarayan has graced a few of them with his Sarangi play to make them even more beautiful on that very little space he got in the interludes, like this one for Madan Moahn.. At times to highlight the melancholy.. 4. Thehariye Hosh me aa loon - Muhabbat Isko Kahte Hain - Khayyam If Adaalat song makes you feel Sarangi is all about Melancholy, this one by Khayyam gives it a beautiful playful romantic color. This one is a big favorite where Sarangi is just for singer support and runs all along with singers voices, never gets prominence except some very short interludes [where it appears prominently] but loved here how it remains in the background with singing as a support base.. Pt. Ramnarayan's magic at work.. 5. Kshudhito Pashan (Tapan Sinha) - BGM Pt. Ram Narayan ji's Sarangi also graced some of the best regional cinema, like Satyajit Ray's cinema [Abhijaan] and Tapan Sinha's Kshudhito Pashan where Pt. Ram Narayan played Sarangi for the vocals of Ustad Amir Khan saab and was supported by Nikhil Banerjee on Sitar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan on Sarod.
