In this instructional video, we provide a comprehensive, step-by-step guide on performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on an adult, adhering to the latest UK first aid guidelines. Immediate and effective CPR can significantly enhance the chances of survival in cardiac arrest situations. Essential Steps to Perform CPR on an Adult: Ensure Safety: Before approaching, ensure the environment is safe for both you and the casualty. Assess Responsiveness: Gently shake the person's shoulders and shout, "Are you okay?" If there's no response, proceed to the next step. Call Emergency Services: Dial 999 immediately or ask someone nearby to call. Use the speaker function on your phone to communicate while attending to the person. Open the Airway: Tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway. Check for Normal Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds. Occasional gasps are not considered normal breathing. Begin Chest Compressions: Hand Placement: Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest (lower half of the sternum), with the other hand on top. Body Position: Keep your arms straight and shoulders directly over your hands. Compression Technique: Press down hard and fast, at least 5 cm deep, at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute. Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions. Provide Rescue Breaths (if trained and comfortable): After 30 compressions, open the airway again using the head-tilt, chin-lift manoeuvre. Pinch the person's nose shut, take a normal breath, and make a complete seal over their mouth with yours. Blow steadily into the mouth for about one second, watching for the chest to rise. Give two rescue breaths. If unwilling or unable to provide rescue breaths, continue with chest compressions only. Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if Available: Turn on the AED and follow its verbal instructions. Expose the person's chest and attach the electrode pads as directed. Ensure no one is touching the person during analysis and shock delivery. If a shock is advised, deliver it and immediately resume CPR starting with chest compressions. Continue CPR: Keep performing cycles of 30 compressions and two breaths (or continuous compressions if not giving breaths) until professional help arrives or the person shows signs of life. Regular training and refreshers are crucial to maintain proficiency in CPR techniques. To enhance your skills and confidence, consider enrolling in a certified first aid course.
