Hard milling refers to milling steel parts that have an up to 64 Rockwell C hardness and can also be an alternative to grinding or EDM processes known to be time-consuming. Hard milling by indexable cutters is very similar to normal machining but requires a different approach. 1. The insert geometry requires a ground T-land with a reinforced cutting edge and a round contour. 2. The grade of the insert needs to have a hard substrate with a suitable coating to withstand the high temperature during machining, compared to similar grades when matching high temperature alloys. 3. Use a tool holder with 4 or more flutes to reduce chip load. 4. Use high static and dynamic rigidity work and tool holding devices. 5. Use a tool holder with minimum runouts - and try to maintain cutter engagement with the workpiece to reduce vibration during machining. 6. For cooling, only air blast and nothing else. Cutting conditions: 1. Use a light width of cut, typically between 25-40% of the tool diameter. 2. Use a light depth of cut, between 0.15 to 0.4mm 3. Use a low feed per tooth, usually less than the T-land width All these conditions will help control the temperature on the cutting edge while assuring longer tool life, better surface finish and higher material removal rates when machining hardened steel!
