Brain to body signals are vital in order to execute under pressure and have more control. This is all about your self talk. When you feel like your mind is scattered and your self talk and thoughts are holding you back then this is the cue to take conscious control of your internal dialogue. By simply saying something like “im good I’ve got this” what you are actually doing is activated higher brain centres associated with emotional regulation, creativity and focus. Body to brain signals are equally if not more important. These are the signals your body is sending your brain for interpretation of your physical state. By simply releasing tension in your body you are sending clear signals to your brain that you are alert, calm and in control. Giving the mind something to focus on can help get you out of your head and re-centre your focus and concentration. A countdown is just one of many examples. It can be something like clicking your fingers, a ritual that you do, visualising yourself executing what you’re about to do, or performing a few slow breaths. All are conscious processes that again activate higher brain centres (frontal cortex) that give you more freedom to respond rather than react to situations. Lastly, the human stress response is non specific, meaning that the same stress response that is initiated when there is air hunger is the same stress response that is activated when you are confronted with any demand, challenge or pressure moment. Take this simple pattern and apply it in real time pressure situations and you will find that you become the driver not the passenger.
