For years, many residents occupying hijacked buildings in the City of Johannesburg have been exploited by illegal landlords and been victims of crimes. On the 31st of August, 2023, 76 people were killed and families became homeless when a deadly and massive fire swept through the Usindiso building. This tragic event brought to light the plight of residents occupying hijacked buildings in the City of Johannesburg's inner City. The Inner City Federation is one of the organisations that has been in the forefront of fighting for the rights of residents, advocating for better housing and basic services, and challenge the stigma associated with low-income residents in the inner city.
