The BMP-1 was without a doubt one of the most influential infantry fighting vehicle designs of the cold war era. Several countries have copied this IFV both with and without license. In China, it is known as Type 86, or WZ501. Currently the Chinese armed forces are operating 600 units and about 650 Type 86A, an upgraded version roughly equivalent to the Soviet BMP-2.
