I bought a 1963 Pontiac Catalina Coupe with a 389 engine out of Iowa that has sat since the mid 70s! When I bought the car, the original engine was stuck and disassembled. I didn't have a running 389 laying around, so I wanted to see if I could put together an engine out of mostly parts I had in my junkyard. I used the short block from a 63 Catalina sedan with 80k miles, the heads off a 63 Bonneville 4 door hardtop with 60k miles, and some additional parts from a core engine that I had. Parts purchased were: tune up, gasket kit, oil pump, and timing set. Everything else was parts I had on hand. Buddy Mike Jones stopped by for a couple days to help me put the engine together. While we had everything apart, we lapped the valves, installed a new timing set and oil pump, and resealed the engine. We also opted to install the Slim Jim automatic transmission that was in the sedan parts car due to it having lower miles than this catalina. This catalina shows 39k on the clock, which I assume to be 139K due to the fact that the car had been repainted prior. Although the car had been painted long ago, the bodywork held up surprisingly well, with only a little of it in the lower quarters becoming visible again. The lacquer paint is pretty well faded and cracked, but the interior held up surprisingly well. All of the interior appears to be original with the exception of the AM Motorola radio and the speakers on the package tray. This slick looking coupe got only a handful of options. From what I can tell, the only boxes checked were reverse lights, power steering, power brakes, and an automatic transmission. Not even seatbelts were ordered (the good ole days). All in all in this video, we put an engine together with a non-original 4 barrel intake, buffed the paint as best as I could with the time alotted, went through the brakes, swapped the fuel tank and radiator, mounted nicer tires, and detailed the interior. It was a fun couple weeks with rewarding results! If you want to own this hot rod, email me at chiefclassicauto@gmail.com. $7500 and it can be yours. I have a clean title in my dealership's name: Chief Classic Auto Sales. Located in Arlington, NE. Thanks for watching!
