Jerry Pinto is a writer based in Mumbai. In 2012, he published his first novel, 'Em and the Big Hoom '(2012). Though a fiction debut, the book straddles between fiction and memoir. Deeply moving and convincing, 'Em and the Big Hoom' received wide acclaim and won numerous awards including the Hindu Literary Prize (2012), the Crossword Book Award (2013), the Sahitya Akademi Award (2016), and the Windham–Campbell Literature Prize (2016). In recent years, Pinto has also emerged as a bilingual translator. His project of translation includes a rich body of texts by those that were historically oppressed, including Daya Pawar’s 'Baluta', (2015) the first Dalit autobiography which was published in Marathi in 1978. In this interview, he talks to Kanika Katyal about his project of translation.
