In this Speaking Through the Ages episode, we travel back to America to cover Theodore Roosevelt's leadership in the Progressive Era. You'll see how Theodore Roosevelt used his "Square Deal" policies to conserve his beloved American wilderness, crack down on corporate corruption, and protect the consumers. This prepares us for his famous speech, The Men with the Muck-rakes. *** 🎥Video Snippet 🎥 Our last few speeches have been delivered by numerous British historical figures. But our first speech given on this channel was the “Strenuous Life” given by the Governor of New York in 1899 — Theodore Roosevelt. After the Spanish-American war ended on Aug 13, 1898, Roosevelt was elected governor. He served as governor from January 1899 to Dec 1900. However, his stance against corruption irritated other New York politicians and businessmen, including the big boss of the New York Republicans — Senator Thomas C. Platt. He conspired with the national party boss Mark Hanna to convince future President William McKinley to name Roosevelt his running mate. This effectively removed Roosevelt from New York. *** CONTENT 00:00 - Intro 00:56 - Becoming President 02:38 - The Square Deal Re-election 04:21 - Roosevelt a Progressive Leader 04:58 - The Muck-rakers 05:44 - Thanks for Exploring the Ages With Us 06:17 - Cool End Gif
