The Laugavegur Trail - Iceland

Backpacking trip on Iceland’s Laugavegur Trail, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. The first word that comes to mind to describe this landscape is primordial. It has to be one of the most beautiful trails in the world, and it also feels like walking through an early earth… like the planet as it might have been billions of years ago. There’s old volcanos, some that formed violently under glaciers fracturing the rock into many colors. There’s new flows from recent small eruptions, pumice, black sand, bright lime green moss, boiling vents with orange bacteria and the smell of sulphur… It’s just otherworldly. From Landmannalauger we traveled to Hrafntinnusker which is situated in a huge caldera. The ground here is strewn with chunks of obsidian, then to Álftavatn, which means “Swan Lake”, then to Emstrur before finishing in the green valley of Thor’s Forest, Þórsmörk.
