2022 marked the 180th year since the opening of the Prince Of Wales Tunnel which runs beneath the town of Shildon and was the first railway tunnel in the world to run beneath a town in such manner. Its opening in 1842 enabled steam hauled locomotive power to transport people and goods around the landscape west of Shildon to and from the coast removing the need for the static steam engines and rope hauled inclines at Brusselton, Etherley and Shildon itself where such an incline brought coal up and over from Eldon on the Black Boy Line. To mark this anniversary, and to celebrate today's Shildon more widely. the Shildon Institute Singers, who are an informal and inclusive singing group that meet each Friday at 6pm at the Railway Institute, have created and performed a new song and short film. This project has been enabled by funding support from Create North, part of Creativity Works. The song is entitled "The Light at the End of the Shildon Tunnel." It was composed for the community singing group by founder Dave Reynolds, a Director of the Shildon Heritage Alliance CIC. He says of the song, "For a town with such a great and historic story to tell about its place in the world, Shildon nowadays has a tendency to 'do itself down'. It's understandable given that it has lost something of its stature in engineering industry terms, but it's still a wonderful place to live and grow up, and populated by extraordinary ordinary people with strong spirit. This is a small town far from done with itself, and has the potential for great stories in the future, not just the past." "We wanted to express this, through this song by focusing, as the saying goes, on the light at the end of the tunnel - using the famous tunnel that passes beneath us as a metaphor." The scenes in the short film were suggested by members of the singing group as being some of the things they most loved, felt proud about or most enjoyed to look at around our community of Shildon. Thus, though the Prince of Wales Tunnel tunnel itself plays a cameo role, the short film accompanying the song is rather a postcard from Shildon today. It's easy to find things that frustrate us about our town, but there's nothing we can't do together about those things - and when you look past the those things that make you sad or mad, there is so much more to love about where we live. "For the times of our lives, are still waiting ahead. What's behind still remains, but we'll always know who we are." We hope you enjoy both the song and the film Special thanks: Create North Our friendly singing coach Rosie Bradford Each and every one of our Shildon Institute Singers, from the regulars to those who pop in and out from time to time - you are all always welcome.
