How to grow wisteria in the garden and when it flowers Hello everyone, today we will talk about wisteria, one of the most loved climbing plants for its spectacular flowering and its inebriating scent. We will find out when it flowers and how to grow it in your garden. Wisteria is famous for its magnificent spring flowering. In Italy, the main flowering generally occurs between April and May, when long clusters of lilac, purple or white flowers hang from its branches creating a breathtaking waterfall effect. Some varieties may have a second, lighter flowering in late summer. The most common species, Wisteria sinensis, flowers before developing leaves, while Wisteria floribunda flowers at the same time as the leaves appear. To successfully grow wisteria, choose a sunny or partially shaded position. It is a plant that loves the sun, so the more light it receives, the more abundant the flowering will be. Make sure the soil is well drained and fertile. Be careful though: wisteria is vigorous and can become very heavy, so choose a sturdy structure such as a pergola or a solid wall to support it. The ideal time to plant wisteria is autumn or early spring. Dig a hole about 60 cm deep and the same width. Enrich the soil with mature compost and, if the soil is too clayey, add sand. Position the plant at the same depth as it was in the pot, water abundantly and apply a layer of mulch around the base. Pruning is essential for wisteria. In summer, after flowering, shorten the lateral branches leaving 5-6 buds to encourage the formation of flowers the following year. In winter, when the plant is dormant, carry out a more drastic pruning, reducing the lateral branches to 2-3 buds. This control is important because wisteria grows quickly and could invade unwanted spaces or damage structures with its robust roots and branches. During the first two years, water regularly, especially during dry periods. Once established, wisteria is quite drought tolerant. In spring, provide a fertilizer that is low in nitrogen but high in phosphorus and potassium to encourage flowering rather than leaf growth. Be careful: all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so keep children and pets away. With the right care, your wisteria will give you a show of color and scent for many years.
