Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula has experienced significant volcanic activity recently, with the most recent eruption commencing on November 20, 2024. This marks the seventh eruption in the area since December 2023. The eruption began with a fissure approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) long, emitting lava flows that have notably impacted local infrastructure. The renowned Blue Lagoon spa was temporarily closed as lava encroached upon its vicinity, engulfing its parking lot and threatening nearby facilities. Protective barriers were constructed to divert the lava flow and safeguard critical areas. In response to the eruption, authorities evacuated around 50 homes in the nearby town of Grindavík as a precautionary measure. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has been closely monitoring the situation, noting that while the eruption poses no immediate threat to air travel, gas emissions could affect parts of the peninsula, including Grindavík. As of December 11, 2024, volcanic activity has subsided, with lava flow rates decreasing and no significant advancement observed. However, ground uplift has resumed in the Svartsengi area, indicating ongoing magmatic activity beneath the surface. The recent eruptions are part of a series of volcanic events that began in December 2023, following an intense earthquake swarm in November 2023. This period of activity has been unprecedented, with the volcanic system reactivating after approximately 800 years of dormancy. For the most current information and safety advisories, it is recommended to consult the Icelandic Meteorological Office and local authorities. --- This camera is situated on the southern tip of Þorbjörn. Þorbjörn is a 243 m high volcanic mountain next to the town of Grindavík. More AfarTV Coverage of this eruption: Cam A Livestream (4K Ultra HD): • 🔴 Live Now: Iceland Volcanic Eruption...
