This virtual walking tour goes along the former course of the infamous Berlin Wall between East and West Berlin in the city center. On this first stage we walk on the Wall Trail from the former Checkpoint Charlie border crossing past Potsdamer Platz to the Brandenburg Gate. On the way we will pass an original section of the wall and you will notice, that the traces and the history of the former border are documented in different ways. Please share, comment, like and suscribe to my channel, if you liked the video! Thank you for your support! The Berlin Wall was a guarded concrete barrier that physically sealed off West-Berlin from surrounding East Germany, including East Berlin. Construction of the wall was commenced by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) on 13 August 1961 to prevent East German citizens from fleeing to the West (before that around 3 million GDR-citizens had defected). With each subsequent attempt to escape, the border was expanded and through the years, the Berlin Wall evolved through four versions. The "fourth-generation Wall" was the final (1975-1989) and most sophisticated version. The border area consisted of a security zone, then the first inner wall, followed by an electrified alarm fence, tank barriers wrapped with barbed wire, watchtowers every 150 m (492 ft), several hundred border guards who had orders to shoot, lightning, a guard road, a sand bank, an anti vehicle ditch, a second concrete wall with rounded top, an outer strip. There were nine border crossings between East and West Berlin, of which the crossing for foreigners, allies and diplomats, the Checkpoint Chalie, was the most famous one. After the fall of the wall, the Berliners wanted to forget the division of the city as quickly as possible and 99.99 percent of the wall and the border strip have disappeared. Today you need a lot of imagination to imagine the divided Berlin. Historical photos and pictures may help, but countless new buildings have been built since 1989 along the Wall Trail. 00:00 Intro 00:05 photo from 1989 00:28 Checkpoin gallery introduction 00:46 City map with the course of the wall 01:14 Maps showing the division of Berlin (left) and Germany (right) after 1945 01:28 Historical photos from 1945 to 1963 02:39 former border crossing Checkpoint Charlie 03:32 the area now an in the 1980s 03:45 Historical and current photos of the wall in different places 05:08 Small image of the life-size Assisi panometer of the border in Kreuzberg 06:10 Historical and current photos of the wall in different places 07:50 Trabi museum 09:03 Wall marking, double row of paving stones 09:35 Memorial plaque escape tunnel 09:50 Trabiworld (former East German cars) 11:00 Berlin Hi-Flyer 11:10 Remnants of the wall 11:50 Federal Ministry of Finance (former MInistry of Aviation during the period of Nazi Germany) 12:00 Remnants of the wall 13:00 Sculpture by Eberhard Foest depicting the Berlin Wall "Mauerskulpturen" 13:40 Remnants of the wall 14:05 Escape story of the Holzapfel family: with the cable car over the wall 15:10 Remnants of the wall and Martin-Gropius building (museum) 17:14 Exhibition "Topography of Terror"on the site of buildings which during the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945 was the SS Reich Main Security Office, the headquarters of the Sicherheitspolizei, SD, Einsatzgruppen and Gestapo 17:45 House of Representatives of Berlin (former Prussian Parliament) 19:05 different ways of marking the course of the Wall 20:20 Information column on the Wall Trail 20:30 View of the street as it looked like at the time of the Wall 20:45 towards Potsdamer Platz 22:39 the original wall in the new building of the Federal Ministry for the Environment 24:00 Potsdamer Platz 24:30 The "Korean Pavillon of Reunification" 26:00 another version of the marking of the course of the Wall 26:10 Train Station Potsdam Platz 26:40 Pillars of light 28:00 Leipziger Platz 29:00 All-round view of Leipziger and Potsdamer Platz (new buildings) 29:15 Remnants of the Wall with documentation 31:30 Amrit - Indian restaurant 32:25 Representative offices of some federal states with pictures of the former border strip 35:25 Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe 39:40 Embassy of the United States, Berlin 41:00 The Brandenburg Gate 42:54 Pariser Platz with new buildings
