I decided to record a video that provides a side-by-side comparison of two Golden Era Martin guitars--a 1930 OM-18 and a 1929 000-18. The guitars were made within a year of each other, but they're quite different in construction. The most notable difference is the body shape. The 000-18 has 12 frets clear of the body like a traditional classical guitar, resulting in a longer body with more internal volume. The OM was one of Martin's first "modern" guitars, with 14 frets clear of the body, resulting in a slightly smaller body size. The OM also has a narrower neck, a pickguard, a solid headstock with banjo tuners, and a "belly bridge" instead of the 000-18's smaller rectangular bridge. Both guitars have bar frets, ebony neck rods as reinforcement, and ebony nuts. The songs I played on each guitar (with tunings and keys) are: Off to California (standard, G) Down Yonder (standard, G) Diddy Wah Diddy (standard, C) Someone to Watch Over Me (standard, D) St. Thomas (Drop-D, D) The Boys of Blue Hill (Drop D, D) For more music, visit my website at www.fingerstyle2.com.
