Children's Book in Space - a Project to Inspire Reading & Unleash Students' Imagination

Marcus Alexander is the Patron of Reading for The Baird Primary Academy. Marcus spent the year guiding students as they produced their own Charlie Keeper themed short-books. During this period one of the students, having recently read Keepers of the Realms, was overheard saying: ‘When I read Keeper of the Realms I feel as though I’m taken out of this world…’ Both Marcus and the teachers at the Baird Primary Academy thought this was the perfect opportunity to take this statement and run with it. So…we decided to send one of the Keeper of the Realms books into space to really unleash their imagination and inspire creativity! (Technically 'near-space' as we only reached an altitude of 35,000m. The Karman line that marks the edge of space starts at 100,000m. But hey, still awesome!) Students not only produced their own short books but tying in with the #CreativityTakesFlight project wrote additional space themed stories and poetry and researched the subject of aviation and space flight. Over the year literacy rates soared: • 93% year 6 students made expected progress in reading • 89% year 5 students made expected progress in reading • Overall The Baird Primary Academy saw a 24% increase in reading compared to the previous year’s published figures. There was an uptake in creativity across key subjects as a tie-in to this project. As students prepared to launch the weather balloon they used their maths and I.T skills, delved deeper into geography and science and went on to collaborate with classmates and develop their common sense and practical skills as the built the rig and payload box.
