Arc Of Attrition By UTMB 50K 2026 | First Time On The Mountain | #utmb #ultra #running #trailrunning #hiking #southwestcoastpath #cornwall #vlog #race #fitness #injinji #ultra The Arc Of Attrition 25 mile category race (26.49) follows the rugged cliffs and coves of the Cornish South-West Coastal Path. Starting at the Harbour in St Ives then through, Lelant, Hayle, Phillack, The Towans Sand Dunes, Gwithian, Godrevy, Basset’s Cove 🐶, Portreath, Porthtowen, and finishing at the Mount Pleasant Eco Park. There is a total elevation gain of 1184m or 3884ft for the route according to my watch and Garmin, but I think Strava decided otherwise! This was my second UTMB race and I was hoping to bag two more UTMB running stones! When I signed up for the “Arc Of Attrition” I thought it would be very similar to the Beachy Head Marathon, but with a more rugged terrain along the South West Coastal Path and of course the winter weather. It turned out far more challenging than I thought because it had so many types of surfaces and the terrain was very technical. It really was a roller coaster ride, especially from Gwithian to Porthtowan with steep zig-zagging ascents and descents near Portreath. It featured dramatic cliffs, mining heritage sites like Great Wheal Charlotte, and seal spotting at Mutton Cove🦭. It was very steep making running poles an advantage, but I decided they were not worth the extra weight!🤯 I was very fortunate with the weather on the day, which stayed mainly dry and only a slight breeze. However Storm Ingrid had battered the Cornish coast for the previous days and created mud fest conditions on large parts of the course, which really did sap my energy levels along with several sets of steep steps. I had a few mishaps along the way including, losing my salt-sticks at the start of the race, and destroying my Hoka Speedgoats on the radiator before the race! However my substitute Inov8 Ultra Talons turned out to be the better shoe for the day! The organisers also increase the difficulty this year by adding two additional large climbs and increased the distance for a sting in the tail! It really did live up to the “Arc Of Attrition” name and I really had to dig deep at the end. I finished the race in 06:15:29, but all in all, I was very proud of myself for getting it done, bagging two more UTMB running stones, and of course the awesome medal!🏅 A big shout out to all the volunteer “Arc Angels” and all my fellow runners that made the race so good. If you want a super tough cross country style long winter race, then I certainly would recommend this one! I ran in my #Inov8 X Talon 260 v2, fantastic grip!
