Match Day 2021 has come and gone. I am sending a huge, warm congratulations to all of the applicants who matched with a genetic counseling program. And for those of you who did not match- I am sorry- the application process is lengthy and all-consuming and I know you invested your time, money, and efforts. The next four weeks of Wannabe Wednesday are for you. I am sharing interviews with four women who didn't match with a GC program. Two women continued applying until they matched and two moved on to a different school or career path. They'll all share about how they coped with the bad news and what helped them decide to switch gears to a different career or gear up for another admission cycle. Those who reapplied will share how they improved their application and interview skills for the next cycle. Today's interview is with Laura, a first-year student at Sarah Lawrence College. She shares her experience applying to genetic counseling grad school three times before matching. Between each application cycle, Laura coped with the news, evaluated possible next steps, and pushed forward to make improvements to her application and interview skills. It was a longer road than she originally anticipated, but she feels right at home in her genetic counseling program and doesn't regret her journey or the experiences gained while reapplying. Laura recommended that any future and current applicants join the GC Chat Discord Server ( / discord an active and supportive online forum with hundreds of current GC students and applicants. Here you can find support, stay up-to-date with current topics in genetic counseling and resources for applying to graduate school. I hope you enjoy the interview!
