Where are hot deserts found? What is the climate of hot deserts? What are the soils like in hot deserts? This is the twenty-ninth video for the AQA GCSE 9-1 Geography course, and the ninth video of The Living World topic. The Living World Playlist: » • The Living World | AQA GCSE 9-1 Geography Follow me on all platforms: » https://linktr.ee/keducate Do you have a video suggestion? » https://forms.gle/gxc3xHQ1b1wUeANT9 Video Script: Hot deserts are found near the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, around 30°N and S, with notable examples including the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa and the Great Victoria Desert in Australia. They have very high temperatures - in summer these can exceed 40 degrees while in winter they range from 20-30 degrees. The deserts are also cold during the night - where temperatures can drop below 0. This is due to the lack of cloud cover. Precipitation is very low - with less than 250 mm of rainfall per year. This rain often falls around the same time too, meaning the rest of the year is very dry. Desert soils are very dry however they quickly soak up water when it rains. They are sandy and rocky, and often appear crusty due to evaporation. Water is drawn up to the surface and when it evaporates, salt is left behind. The soil has low organic matter and is not very fertile. These characteristics make it difficult for plants and animals to survive, however the next video will cover how species have adapted to the unique conditions of the desert. -- GCSE Geography 05/05/2023 Keducate
