Beeple built a piece he can't fully control. That's the whole point. Diffuse Control is a new work by Mike Winkelmann — known globally as Beeple — premiering at NODE in Palo Alto. The piece is interactive, AI-generated, and different every single time it's shown. Not because of randomness. Because of intention. For each exhibition, a set of curators selects six images. Those images are fed into an AI system that renders a new version of a sculptural box — a physical object whose appearance changes depending on what the curators choose. Visitors can interact with it in real time via phone or kiosk, watching the piece respond and shift before their eyes. They can also generate a physical print on the spot — a tangible artifact of their specific interaction with the work. This iteration of Diffuse Control was shaped by Matt Hall, John Watkinson, and Amanda, who selected art-historical images representing distinct CryptoPunks traits — tiaras, necklaces, accessories — that collide the history of digital ownership with the history of art. Beeple's central question with this work: what happens when you hand creative control to systems and people you can't predict? His answer is the piece itself — a living demonstration of how AI gets used in ways its makers never anticipated. For Beeple, NODE represents something larger. A physical home for digital art. A space where the medium stops needing to be explained and starts being experienced.
