Performers: Banda Municipal de A Coruña and Ximo Vicedo (soloist). Conductor: Juan Miguel Romero. ABOUT THE PIECE: Commissioned by and dedicated to my beloved friend David Pont Ripoll. This new version is completely re-imagined and gratefully dedicated to Joseph Alessi and Ximo Vicedo, who inspired its creation. First performance of this re-imagined version was given by A Coruña Municipal Wind Orchestra, featuring Ximo Vicedo as the trombone soloist and conducted by Juan Miguel Romero, at the Colón Theatre in A Coruña, Spain, on December 3, 2023. Three Revelations draws its extramusical source from three revelations extracted from the Lotus Sūtra, one of the most influential and revered Mahāyāna Buddhist sūtras. Although each of these revelations gives its title to a specific movement, there is no associated programmatic reading; instead, there is a conceptual figuration-abstraction linked to the sonic gesture itself. These revelation-movements are: I. To awaken in the light of the Universe. This movement portrays the immensity and richness of the human mind's experience by expanding its field of vision from the narrow confines of everyday life to the contemplation of the entire universe and merging with it — the one in the whole. The entire movement is generated from the sound "OM." In Buddhist cosmology, "OM" is the primordial sound of the Universe, the sacred sound from which all other sounds and words emerge. The "OM" is fixed here (or rather approximated) to the "D flat" of the twelve-tone equal temperament, primarily receiving a spectral and polytonal treatment. The formal aspect of the movement is based on the "theme with variations" and establishes, in its horizontal course, a precept of Buddhist cosmogony: the Universe is in an eternal cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. II. To contemplate the depths of the soul. This movement represents a departure of the mind from the "outer" universe to the "inner" universe — an attempt to fathom the limitless possibilities of human consciousness in its search for identity, answering the eternal questions that begin with the word "Why?". The one in the one. Arranged in rondo form, this second movement holds the highest degree of figuration, immersing listeners in a purely ritualistic plane. The composition also explores "holophonic" techniques through the agglutination of sonorous gestures, with diegetic connotations, while paying attention to their spectral analysis. III. To rejoice in the beauty of peace. This movement represents the understanding that on Earth, peace is not merely the absence of war, destruction, pain, and/or suffering, but is also something beautiful in itself — a cause for the sincere joy of all creatures, everywhere, who share the same eternal quest as true brothers and sisters. The whole in the whole. This final revelation movement, characterized by a high degree of eclecticism, is punctuated by transformations and/or superpositions of dances from a multicultural "goulash". Taking dance as an allegory for the beauty of peace and oscillating between styles such as "bebop," "soleá por bulería," "reel," and "batucada"; the entire movement is crafted as an explosion of rhythm and color, with its dramatic and virtuosic intensity reaching a climax toward the double conclusion of the work. Throughout its course, one may witness, perhaps, an honest and pure glimpse of fraternity. For further information: https://www.aalcaldemusic.com/threere... 00:00 Time before time... 05:41 I.
