Haid Al-Jazil is arguably one of the most unique villages on the planet. The houses of the village are perched on top of a giant rock, overlooking a long, mostly deserted valley in the Dawan district of Yemen, in Hadhramaut province. Although it doesn’t look very big from a distance, the rock is actually 100 meters high. According to history, this ancient settlement has been around for 500 years. It used to be inhabited by many people. Of the hundreds who once lived here a few decades ago, a census in recent years revealed a population of just 17. The population has declined drastically in the last three decades, with many locals moving to Saudi Arabia where salaries and lifestyles are more attractive. Those who remain in the village are mostly children or elderly. In addition, there are only 45 houses left here. Some of them are even uninhabitable.
