Peptic ulcer disease is multifactorial in etiology. Most common cause is use of pain killers, mostly non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or diclofenac or aspirin or naproxen. The other medicines that can cause this includes steroids, and occasionally bone protecting medications. The other causes include rarely things like Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome and also a bacteria called as H. pylori, which is more common in India than in western world. Certain type of lifestyle factors also help in developing of Peptic ulcer disease, mainly smoking and consumption of excess alcohol, also having some high fat diet as well. The most common symptom one would experience with Peptic ulcer disease is burning sensation in the abdomen followed by pain, nausea, vomiting, weight loss. Occasionally patients can also present with vomiting blood or passing dark black colored stool or motion which is usually altered blood bleeding from the ulcer.
