In this lecture, I want us to think about context not so much as surrounding information but rather as segments of a larger conversation–a verbal exchange between living words in living poems which go on living and speaking long after their authors are dead. Placing in contexts asks us to consider a poem not as an isolated individual but rather as a member of a community of poems. In the main lecture, we explore the different kinds of contexts in which poetry is created and enjoyed–from the biographical, historical contexts to the literary contexts of traditions and movements. The modules and lessons are asynchronous, which means you can take them at any time in any order you want. Each module contains a main lecture, and there are some materials you can download as well.
